Probiotics in the Treatment of Gastrointestinal Diseases

چکیده
The mammalian intestinal tract contains a complex and diverse society of both pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria. While it is estimated that there are more than 400 bacterial species inhabiting the human intestinal tract, many of these are uncultivated micro-organisms that have complex interactions with other microflora and their host. Recent advances in molecular biology and genetics will facilitate the identification of some unknown organisms through the science of metagenomics. Subsequent analyses of genetic code may inform microbiologists on how to create suitable culture conditions for these unknown organisms in order to facilitate further study and characterization. Although environmental factors and the genetic make-up of the host can modulate the distribution of microbial strains, diet appears to be a major factor in regulating the concentration of individual species of micro-organisms that colonize the gut. In addition, several gastrointestinal diseases have been associated with imbalances in the endogenous microflora population.

Effects of Probiotics and Prebiotics in Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) including most important forms; Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC); are chronic diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract with unclear etiology and pathology. The role of gut microbiota has recently been considered as major a factor, since altered microbiome or "dysbiosis" is a key player in the protracted course of inflammation in IBD. Howeve...
متن کاملThe effect of probiotics on signaling pathways of genes involved in depression: review article
Depression is the psychological disorder which caused by chronic stress and extensive communication network between the gastrointestinal system via the “gut–brain-microbiota axis”. Depression can systematically activate/deactivate many genes and signaling molecules involved in the pathogenesis of the gastrointestinal disease. Whereas, most of the anti-depressant drugs suppress the depression sy...
متن کاملAn Overview on Probiotics as an Alternative Strategy for Prevention and Treatment of Human Diseases
Aims: Probiotics are viable and useful microorganisms, which are beneficial factors for human and animal health by altering their microbial flora. Most of the probiotics belong to a large group of bacteria in the human gastrointestinal tract. There are several clinical shreds of evidence that show anti-carcinogenic effects of probiotics through altering digestive enzymes, inhibition of carcinog...

متن کاملThe role of microbiota, probiotics and prebiotics in dermatology
Probiotics are living microorganisms that, when used adequately, have beneficial effects on the host, and their superiority is that they are safe and secure for the host. The use of probiotics in addition to the digestive tract, has been studied in immune function, skin diseases, diabetes, cancer, liver disease, hypertension, urogenital system and oral cavity. In general, probiotics seem to be ...
